Miami Software Engineering Teacher Who Has Changed Numerous Lives Now Battles Aggressive Cancer, Seeks Community Support During Holiday Season of Giving

As we enter the holiday season, a time for generosity and giving back, one Miami resident who has dedicated his career to transforming lives is now facing the battle of his own life. Dustin Hurtt, a beloved member of the Miami community and a passionate teacher of web development and software engineering, is fighting aggressive Cancer and is reaching out for support during this challenging time.

Dustin, who has helped countless individuals change their lives and careers through his work as a former teacher at Ironhack, underwent a Pneumonectomy (Lung Removal Surgery) at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City earlier this year. Although initially thought to have removed all detectable Cancerous Tissues, his Oncologist at Mount Sinai has since discovered that a small amount of Cancer remains, necessitating innovative and costly treatment options.

One such option is a Phase I trial set up by the Jaime Leandro Foundation, which offers hope but comes at a significant financial cost. Dustin is currently raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to help cover the expenses associated with these life-saving treatments, which are not currently covered by insurance.

"Over the years, I've had the privilege of witnessing numerous lives transformed through my work as a teacher," Dustin shares. "Many of my students have gone on to build successful careers in tech, and knowing that I played a role in their journey has been incredibly fulfilling. Now, as I face my own battle with Cancer, I am drawing strength from the focus and determination I've seen in my students."

Dustin's impact on his students and the Miami community has been profound. Several of his graduates have contributed comments to Dustin's qualities as both an instructor and a person.

"Dustin’s guidance at Ironhack didn’t just teach me to code—it unlocked a career I once thought was out of reach, thanks to his rare blend of patience, insight, and belief in his students. His dedication to our growth inspired me to pursue my goals with a new sense of purpose and determination" - Nikita Valovyy of the Miami area.

"Dustin was an amazing mentor and incredible human being. I am extremely grateful for his wisdom, dedication, and commitment to his students and profession. The impact he's had on our lives is immense." - Juan Camilo Reyes, of the Miami area.

"During my time at Ironhack, Dustin Hurtt’s instruction was invaluable. He demonstrated incredible patience and professionalism and had a talent for helping us view problems from different angles. Whenever we were stuck, he went above and beyond to guide us forward. He was the kind of instructor who matched our effort—if you gave your best, he gave you all the support you needed to succeed, without compromise. His guidance, both during and after the bootcamp, had a profound impact on my career. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his mentorship and dedication." - Alexander Torres Rivera of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

"Dustin is the kind of teacher who goes above and beyond for his students. His passion for coding is contagious, and he has a unique ability to empathize with his students, making complex concepts feel approachable. Dustin’s dedication and support have been instrumental in shaping my career, and giving me the confidence and skills to succeed in the tech industry." - Michael Vu of the San Francisco Bay area.

Despite the challenges he faces, Dustin remains hopeful and committed to fighting for his life and continuing to make a positive impact on others. "I am afraid to die," he admits openly. "But I am determined to find meaning and purpose in my journey. I want to continue 'doing good' in all aspects of my life, whether through my work or otherwise."

As the holiday season of giving begins, Dustin is grateful for the love, prayers, and contributions from his community. He is deeply appreciative of any financial contributions, Social Media shares, or thoughts and prayers as he navigates this difficult time.

Stephanie Menjivar, also a former colleague at Ironhack said, "Cancer is a disease we all hope to never face, yet it impacts so many lives unexpectedly," says Stephanie Menjivar, a former colleague at Ironhack. "Dustin, a selfless educator who has helped countless students launch careers in technology, is now fighting this battle. During this season of giving, I encourage anyone who values teachers, technology, and the power of community to support his campaign. The world needs more people like Dustin, who dedicate their lives to helping others."
