Broadway Enthusiasts And Lovers Of Timeless Musicals Are In For A Treat As Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific Makes Its Way To The Lauderhill Performing Arts Center (LPAC) For The Final Production Of The 2025 Broadway At LPAC Series. Running From April 10th Through April 27th, This Iconic Musical Promises To Captivate Audiences With Its Unforgettable Melodies, Stirring Themes, And Heart-Wrenching Storylines.
From the sweeping romance of "Some Enchanted Evening" to the catchy optimism of "Cock-Eyed Optimist" and the tropical allure of "Bali Ha'i," South Pacific remains one of the most beloved works in the American musical theater canon. The show introduced some of the most enduring songs in Broadway history and its powerful narrative, based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Tales of the South Pacific, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
Set during World War II on a fictional island in the South Pacific, the story revolves around Ensign Nellie Forbush, an American nurse who falls in love with the middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner Emile de Becque. However, their love is tested by Nellie’s internal struggle with Emile's mixed-race children. Meanwhile, a secondary romance between U.S. Marine Lieutenant Joseph Cable and Liat, a young Tonkinese woman, explores Cable’s deep fears of the social repercussions of marrying someone from an ethnic background different than his own. The musical tackles themes of racial prejudice and cultural conflict, most famously in the song “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught,” which remains a poignant commentary on societal intolerance even today.
Michael Ursua, the director and musical director of this production, says that South Pacific’s themes of racial tolerance and the search for personal meaning are as relevant now as ever. “The story itself is beautiful,” says Ursua. “Then there is this panorama of the South Pacific pitted against the narrow-mindedness of bigotry and the horror of the war that was taking place at that time. We see an awakening for some of the characters when they do their own introspection, and the whole idea that people are searching for something or running away from something—or better yet, running to something—is fascinating. And the show’s message on racial tolerance is as relevant as anything written before or since.”
Ursua’s directorial vision is paired with a talented cast that brings these complex characters to life. Christopher Sanders takes on the role of the charming and world-weary Emile de Becque, while Casey Sacco stars as the spunky and idealistic Ensign Nellie Forbush. The role of the fiery Bloody Mary, who plays a pivotal part in the secondary romance between Joseph Cable and Liat, will be portrayed by Marisol Morales-Dow. The cast also includes Lovell Rose as the comical Luther Billis, Collin Salvatore as the conflicted Lieutenant. Joseph Cable, Thaylin Maria as the innocent Liat, Bill Brewer as Lieutenant George Brackett and Dan Carter as Commander. William Harbison. Eytan Deray and Eli Flynn round out the principal cast as Stewpot and Professor, respectively.
The show’s choreography is led by Alex Jorth, who will inject energy and movement into the production, while Clifford Spullock’s lighting design will set the mood for the tropical setting. Christopher Wynters handles the sound design, ensuring that the beautiful melodies of South Pacific are heard clearly and with emotion. Penny Williams serves as the costume supervisor, Justin Lore provides the wigs and Joseph Long takes on the role of the Production Stage Manager, making sure the show runs seamlessly. Kevin Barrett and ACM Theatricals produce the production, bringing together a team of talented artists to create a truly memorable experience.
The South Pacific cast also features a talented ensemble, including Jorge Amador, Emily Rose Cardenas, Jennifer Fraser, Tanner Fults, Santiago Garza, Dru Loman, Emily Morgan, Eric O’Keefe, Brittni Taylore Rhodes, Allyson Rosenblum, Izaiah Scott, Larry Toyter, Corey Vega, Rachel Whittington, Lauren Wickerson and Rachel Wresh. These performers will bring depth and energy to the production, supporting the main storyline with their spirited performances.
